Our journey with Cora began in the demanding realm of military operations, faced with a critical challenge: how to efficiently screen large numbers of people for security risks across various languages and geographies, where the consequences are a matter of life and death for our troops.
Cora emerged from an innovative concept that shifted the focus from traditional lie detection to automated risk assessments. This approach, centered around the universal nature of voice, aimed to swiftly identify and clear low-risk individuals, while flagging high-risk. These alerts enable the concentration of scarce, high-value human expertise on a smaller, more critical group of high-risk individuals.
Our research and development, engineering, and design efforts with Cora were thus directed not towards lie detection, which typically involves a one-on-one interaction with a binary outcome based on intent. Instead, we focused on a more nuanced risk assessment, operating on a spectrum from low to high risk. This paradigm shift in approach has been instrumental in shaping Cora's application in various critical scenarios, including caregiver screening, security vetting, and identifying potential insider threats.
